Celebrate our mighty trees during this family-friendly event for all ages. Learn how to identify trees, why trees are important, how to care for trees, and much more at our hands-on stations. This program is free and open to the public thanks to a generous donation from J. Thomas Tree Service in celebration of The Year of Trees.
Hike: The impact of introduced forest pests at Asbury Woods

Location: meet at Asbury Park, 4106 Asbury Road
Cost: Free, no registration required
Dr. Christopher Dolanc from Mercyhurst University will lead a hike through Asbury Woods’ James Preserve and discuss the impacts of invasive species on our forests. This hike is part of our Arbor Day events. Hikers should meet Dr. Dolanc in the small parking lot at Asbury Park across the street from the nature center. Dress for the weather and be prepared for muddy conditions. Save time and sign the waiver online.
Activities include:
- Tree ID: What to look for when identifying trees.
- Measure the Impact: Measure trees and calculate the carbon they take in each year.
- Hardwood and Softwood: Examine samples of softwoods and hardwoods to learn the differences between them.
- Tree Crafts: Decorate and take home a piece of Asbury Woods.
- Tree Hikes: Learn about the variety of trees at Asbury Woods on a 45-minute guided hike.
- J. Thomas Tree Service will be here giving out tips for home care for your trees.
- Lecture at 2 pm: Foundation for Sustainable Forests will give a short talk about sustainable forest management and its importance to wildlife.
- Tree Giveaway: ReLEAF, an initiative of Lake Erie Arboretum at Frontier Park, will be giving away live trees so you can be part of their project to plant 275,000 trees in Erie County
