Fish Field Day
Fish Field Day | August 24, 2024
11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Nature Center
FREE, open to the public
Join Asbury Woods and local partners for this fun-filled day exploring fish! Get up close and personal with our resident trout through our Trout in the Classroom program. Meet living creatures that are on a trout’s menu, test water quality to see if fish can survive, and learn all about tying flies and fly fishing. Families are sure to have a swimming good time!
Actvities and Stations
On the fly
Try out fly fishing with our local Trout Unlimited chapter. This station will include a fly-fishing demo. You can see how far you can cast your line or how many points you can get by hitting your target!
Fish on
Erie is known for having some of the best fishing in the country. One of those fisheries is Steelhead. The PA Steelhead Association will host a fishing hole where all are encouraged to come and try reeling in one of the “monster steelheads”.
Art on a Hook
Watch some of Erie’s local fly-fishing experts tie flies and give you a chance to try one yourself! Don’t worry, even the kiddos can give it a shot with the Kids Fly Tying Club.
What’s on the menu?
Everyone loves pizza, right? Well, not fish! They have a very different taste palate. Investigate the foundation of the fresh-water food chain by looking at plankton, macroinvertebrates, and other stream life that feed the trout at all stages of their life.
Our Trout in the Classroom
Come see our trout! Asbury Woods has been carefully raising over 100 rainbow trout in our Nature Center to release into our local waterways. Most of the time you don’t get the chance to see such small trout since our eggs only arrived a few days ago, but today you can! Make a Trout Hat, do some coloring with our trout life cycle coloring pages, and grab some fish guides provided by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission.
Aquatic Invasive Species Station
Join Pennsylvania Sea Grant Coastal Outreach Specialist Amber Stilwell to learn about aquatic invasive species (AIS) in Pennsylvania and their impacts on freshwater ecosystems. AIS can pack a big punch to the environment and economy. Understanding common routes of introduction is critical to their management. Participants will learn how they can play a key role in preventing the spread of AIS in the Great Lakes and French Creek Watersheds.
Great Lakes Fishery Commission
Have you ever heard of the vampire fish? Learn about the Great Lakes invader, the sea lamprey, with the Great Lakes Fishery Commission.
Corry Hatchery Stocking Truck
One of our local hatcheries will have their stocking truck to the Asbury Woods Nature Center to talk about all of the work they do to take care of and transport the fish stocked within our community and the surrounding area.
Water is Home
As much as we love swimming, fishing, kayaking, and other water recreation activities, we want to do them in perfect conditions. Who wants to swim in a lake full of toxic algae? Neither do the fish! Learn about the importance of water quality testing and monitoring by conducting some of your own tests and see how you can make a difference.
